Reclaiming the Hall: Amplifying Community Voices

This project featured a day-long art & community event and a related exhibit at the Hall of Fame Gallery entitled "Diversity in Public Art.” This September 21, 2019 public event featured several concurrent performances at the Hall of Fame and a gallery exhibit on campus that featured artists’ perspectives on inclusion, diversity, and bias in defining Great Americans. Additionally, there were presentations and art activities by partnering local media, arts and cultural organizations including WNYC, The Laundromat Project, Barnard, and Five Boro Story Project.

Cynthia developed an accompanying K-12 arts and archives curriculum guide in collaboration with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture’s Teen Curators Program. The curriculum guide extends the conversation by incorporating art, history and other humanities perspectives to examine themes of inclusion and diversity in order to better connect this to student-learning outcomes at BCC. This project was made possible by a 2019 Humanities-NY Vision planning grant and BCC Foundation Auxiliary grant.
